Editing videos is no walk in the park. You need a lot of patience, practice, a computer with a good processor and a GPU, but there is something else, which is much more important. A good video editor.
These days, you can find way too many video editing programs. Most of them are clunky, and barely offer any functionality. Some of these are merely video converter apps, with a trimming tool. A proper video editor should offer more, much more.
And that is exactly what Pinnacle Studio from Corel does. One look at the interface, and you will see the difference in the quality. The dark theme of the program is good, and kind of resembles a graphics editor which Corel is famous for, CorelDRAW. There are a few panes, and a toolbar with various options which we will explain as we explore the program’s features.
The top left of the window houses the Library/Editor pane, while the pane to the right is the preview panel. The bottom pane is where the timeline for the video will be displayed.
The side-panel on the left edge of Pinnacle Studio’s GUI, is set to auto-hide by default. So, when you hover the cursor to the edge the sidebar is visible, and it is hidden when you move away, for a more distraction-free experience. You can use the pin icon to make it stay in view, which is more useful, if you want to quickly add some special effects, etc.
There are 11 buttons or tabs in the sidebar: Projects, Collections, Effects, Transitions, Sound Effects, Titles, Montages and Templates, Sound Stage, Triple Scoop Music, Muserk Sound Effects and Disc Menus.
The Projects tab, is what you will be using for managing existing projects (save, load, delete, etc), or for creating new projects. Creating a project bin, allots a folder within the program, where your videos, and photos will be stored. In other words, Projects has all your movie, disk projects and project packages in the program. Collections consists of the most recent media which you imported to Pinnacle Studio, and smart creations.
The Effects tab has various effects from 2D-3D, Artistic animations, Audio Effects, Camera, Color, Keyers, Steresoscopic, etc. The Transitions options, also available in 2D-3D, Artistic, HFX, HollywoodFX, etc, let you add cool animations to slideshows.
What is a video without audio? And you are not restricted to using music either. You can add various sound effects to your project, from the side panel, including crowd noises, cartoon sounds, animal, instruments, bells, and so much more.
The Title tab, can be used to add special, standard and 3D titels, for your videos. You just have to choose one, and double click in the text field, and enter a caption for your slideshow.
Montages And Templates lets you add some animated transitions using preset themes and templates. SoundStage has many sound effects and music, while Triple Scoop Music allows you to purchase songs from popular artists, while Musersks let you buy sound effects. The Disc Meu option lets you create or choose of the preset menus for your DVD and Blu-ray discs.
Use the import option on the top, to add videos and images to your project. You can also right-click on the Library and use the Quick Import option, or drag and drop the media files from Windows File Manager to the GUI of Pinnacle Studio. You can also use a camera or a phone which you have connected to the computer, to record videos directly, for editing.
Once the media is added to the library, you will see the filenames and thumbnail preview of each video or image. Clicking on one of the media files, displays a much larger preview on the right pane. You can use this panel, to play videos to see how it will look when you edit them.
The preview pane can display content as source preview and timeline preview, and these can be detached and moved around. To add a video or photo for editing, you need to select the files from the Library pane, and just drag them to the timeline. This will arrange the content on a per-frame basis, as in which content will be played at which time position.
The frames are placed on the A/V track of the project. You can add audio tracks from the side panel, by dragging them to the timeline. This also works for effects, and transitions. There are two bars just below the timeline. The top bar is the navigation bar, just click on it and drag the mouse to the left or right to jump to the direction and time position.
You can quickly create a slideshow, by adding some photos to the timeline, and selecting the SmartMovie tool. Just add some music from the side-panel, and click on the preview button, to watch how your slideshow looks in the built-in media player. That’s it, you have created a slideshow in a few clicks of the mouse.
You can customize slideshows and videos, by adding transitions between the content, to make it look even better. To rearrange transitions, or videos or images, just click on them and drag it on to the left or right of the timeline. To split a video, mark the position which you want to divide it from, and use the Split tool button, and it will do the job for you.
Pinnacle Studio can save your projects into photos, videos and audio files, and the content can be exported to DVD or Blu-ray disc (with the built-in MyDVD option), or saved to your computer’s hard drive, in the following formats: AVCHD, DVD (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW, dual layer) DV, HDV, AVI, DivX, WMV, MPEG-1/-2/-4, Flash, 3GP, WAV, MP2, MP3, MP4, H.264, DivX Plus MKV, JPEG, TIF, TGA, BMP.
